★ justice
do justice는 "정당(공평)하게 다루다, 정당(공정)하게 평가하다"는 뜻이다. I should like to do justice to both sides(나는 쌍방을 모두 정당하게 다루고자 한다). We must see this play again to do it justice(이 연극을 정당하게 평가하려면 다시 한 번 보아야 한다).
do justice를 재귀적(再歸的) 용법으로 쓰면 "능력(실력)을 충분히 발휘하다, 마음껏 활약하다"는 뜻이다. He did himself justice in the examination(그는 시험에서 실력을 십분 발휘했다). He finally got a role in which he could do himself justice as an actor(그는 드디어 배우로서 자기의 진가를 십분 발휘할 수 있는 배역을 얻었다).
"Justice is the crowning glory of the virtues(정의는 모든 덕목의 백미(白眉)다)." 로마 철학자 키케로의 말이다.
"Punishment is justice for the unjust(벌은 불의에 대한 정의다)." 성 아우구스티누스의 말이다.
"Justice without force is powerless; force without justice is tyrannical(힘없는 정의는 무력하고 정의 없는 힘은 독재가 된다)." 프랑스 사상가 블레즈 파스칼(Blaise Pascal, 1623~1662)의 말이다. 그는 또 다음과 같이 말했다. "Justice and power must be brought together, so that whatever is just may be powerful, and whatever is powerful may be just(정의와 권력은 함께 가야 한다. 그래야 정의로운 건 권력이 있고 권력이 있는 건 정의로울 수 있다)."
"Whenever a separation is made between liberty and justice, neither, in my opinion, is safe(자유와 정의가 이혼하면 둘 중 어느 것도 안전하지 않다)." 영국 정치가 에드먼드 버크의 말이다.
"Justice is the ligament which holds civilized beings and civilized nations together(정의는 문명화된 사람들과 나라들을 하나로 묶어주는 끈이다)." 미국 정치가 대니얼 웹스터(Daniel Webster, 1782~1852)의 말이다.
"Justice delayed is justice denied(지연된 정의는 부정된 정의다, 정의의 실천을 뒤로 미루는 것은 정의를 부정하는 것이나 다름없다)." 영국 정치가 윌리엄 글래드스턴(William E. Gladstone, 1809~1898)의 말이다.
"Right makes might(정의가 힘을 만든다)." 에이브러햄 링컨이 대통령이 되기 전인 1860년 2월 27일 연설에서 한 말이다. "Might makes Right(=Might is right)(힘이 정의를 만든다, 힘이 곧 정의)." 고대 그리스 철학자 플라톤이 『국가(The Republic, 375 B.C.)』에서 한 말이다. "정의가 힘을 만든다"는 링컨의 주장과는 달리, 미국 외교의 현실을 가리켜 하는 말이다.
"Justice is a commodity which in a more or less adulterated condition the States sells to the citizen as a reward for his allegiance, taxes and personal service(정의란 국가가 시민들의 충성, 납세, 개인적 봉사 등에 대한 보상으로 그들에게 어느 정도 비위를 맞춰가며 팔아먹는 상품이다)." 미국 독설가 앰브로즈 비어스(Ambrose Bierce, 1842~1914)의 말이다.
"Children are innocent and love justice, while most adults are wicked and prefer mercy(아이들은 순진하고 정의를 사랑하는 반면, 대부분의 성인은 부정(不正)하고 자비를 선호한다)." 영국 작가 길버트 체스터턴의 말이다.
"The question of justice arises when those on top can convert their authority positions into large, discrepant, material and social advantages over others(상층부에 있는 자들이 그들의 권력과 지위를 다른 사람들의 이익을 침해하면서 거대하고 모순된 물질적·사회적 특권으로 전환시킬 때에 정의의 문제가 발생한다)." 미국 사회학자 대니얼 벨의 말이다.
"It is never enough to have pity on the victims of injustice if we do nothing to change the unjust situation itself(만약 우리가 잘못된 상황 자체를 바꾸기 위해 아무 일도 하지 않는다면, 불의의 희생자들에게 연민을 갖는 걸로는 충분치 않습니다)." 선교보다는 사회사업을 강조하면서 세계적 영향력을 행사한 영국 성공회 복음주의 신부 존 스톳(John Stott, 1921~2011)의 말이다.
